Transmission slips when cold

I recently bought a 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 with 4r44e trans and 170k miles on the odometer. The transmission will sometimes slip when taking off from a stop, but only when the engine/transmission is cold. Once the engine/trans comes up to normal operating temps the issue goes away.

Any ideas?
