I've got a 2003 Ranger with a 4.0L in it, its a 5 speed, and I need to put a new transmission and clutch into it, I'm just wondering what all I need to replace while I'm in there, I read another post a guy asked about the front and rear seals, also it mentioned a bushing kit, the trucks got 150,000 miles on it as of yesterday, and I'm only assuming I need to put a new clutch and transmission in it because it grinding when I go to put it in gear with the clutch engaged... Also I was told the synchroniser was out in it because sometimes it refuses to go into first gear sometimes, you gotta play with it... people love this at redlights...

So can anyone elaborate on what all I need to pickup to swap this out as far as the bushing kit, seals and things like that go.

Thanks for the time and help. I'll also post pictures while I'm doing it, may help someone down along the line.

Ryan.

Also almost forgot, is it easier to take this out out through the bottom or pull the entire motor and tranny setup?

Ryan.

Sounds like you need a new slave cylinder to me.
Pretty common failure.

Nothing in your description leads me to believe you need a new(er) transmission.

You should also replace the clutch, the pilot bearing, seal up the shift rail plugs (Dorman makes metal cap seals). I wouldn't do the rear main seal unless it is leaking.

Its just easier to replace the rear main if you have the trans out since you have to remove it anyways to get to the rear seal. Same with all previously mentioned fixes, you'll have to pull the trans to do the plugs unless you have a chinese boy with tiny hands to help you.

Sent from the road while ignoring traffic

Truck on jack stands, a screw type jack (not hydraulic) with a block of wood under the oil pan, drop the exhaust Y pipe under the trans, remove the driveshaft and the trans crossmember and the trans drops out the bottom pretty easy without pulling the motor.
