Is there any tips, hints or problems I should know about before I remove a transmission? The last time I worked on a manual trans was in the '80s and that was an old cj5 jeep. Just wondering before I drive 30 miles with my toolbox filled with tools that I think I might need.

I think I might be lucky here. Found a good 5 speed trans out of a 6cyl 2wd 87 Ranger with a blown engine. I need a 5 speed to replace the bad trans in my 2.9 4x4 87 Ranger. The guy only wants $75 for the good trans and he's pulling the cab off today to sell it to someone else, so it'll be easy to get to the new tranny.

Thanks, Ken

Go to your local autoparts store and grab a hydraulic clutch line removal tool, found in most clutch kits, you will need this, the rest is straight forward

i just use some needle nose pliers to get the clutchline off. works good. saves money.

and idk what else to suggest besides take the transfer case off first... especially when you dont have a tranny jack. the tranny and t-case weighed alot more than i expected when i did it the first time on my bii.

go get some mystery oil or some good spray just incase the bolts are froze, especially the ones on the crossmember

good luck

That trans does not work. It will bolt up but it is 2 wheel drive. if your truck is 4x4 it needs the flange for a transfer case. 2 wheel trucks have a slipyoke for the drive shaft.

i just noticed that aswell. 2wd trans will no workie with 4wd. you need to find another unit that is 4wd for your 87 kenwheeler.

It can work, you just need to remove the output shaft from your 4x4 trans and swap with the 2WD trans and remove the tailhousing, bolt up your tcase adapter and set to go:icon_thumby:

No, I could be wrong but I do believe that both are still different castings. You would have to swap the guts from the 2wd into the 4x4 housing keeping that output of course. Quite involved...

Did I read the "Announcement" thread at the top of this forum wrong? It said, all 2.9 V6 engines and transmissions were the same. Does this mean I'm going to have a broken trans and a worthless trans in my garage? Is there any redeeming value to me getting the 2wd tranny? Maybe I can use the innards to fix the 4wd trans or something.

Yes, you can take the 2WD tranny, remove the tailshaft, and remove the output shaft. Then take the output shaft and tcase adapter from your bad 4WD tranny and install them into the 2WD, making it 4WD:icon_thumby:
