Hi all...I have a 65k original mile 1985 Ranger 4x4, 2.8L with a CODE D transmission. That, according to my records, is an FM146. Wasn't the FM146 only used (factory) from '88-'92? The door code says the truck came with the FM-146 and it definitely is one according to the pan and such. Just looking for some advice...need to replace clutch and all soon. Thanks!

Jeff

Yes, the fm146 was factory installed in 88+ 2.9 trucks. By description of the pan, it could very likely be an fm145 (the pans were identical between the two) Based on the mileage, I can't see why the tranny would have already been swapped out for a newer one.

It was much more likely to find a tk5 mated to a 2.8 in '85......

Bear in mind, regardless of mileage, the truck IS going on 24 years old, so I suppose anything is possible.......

As far as the clutch goes, if ordered for an '85, there is only ONE option. They were the same for the fm145/tk5's.

A definitive answer to whether is an fm146 or not, is to determine where the clutch hydraulic line connection is. Fm145's were located at the top of the bell housing with a "hairpin" type clip, and the fm146's were on the side of the housing an were a quick connect fitting.

thanks for the advice

I appreciate the advice on identifying this transmission. I looked at the door code and it was supposedly for the FM146. I will identify the fitting...thank you again!

Jeff

The Code "D" identifies the FM145 from 1985-87

In an '88-92 it is either an FM146(4x4) or FM132(2wd)

The advice on further identification by the style of clutch connection is excellent exactly on target advice.

just assuming that "D" always means one or another
without paying attention to context leads to false conlusions
