so last night i was driving my ranger and was slowing down for a stop sign. i went to shift from 4th to 3rd, and it wouldn't go into 3rd. so i skipped that gear. it shifted into all other gears fine. so i decided to see if it would do it again. when accelerating it shifts from 2 - 3 just fine, but when decelerating it wont shift from 4 - 3. what could it be?? its the m5od tranny.

try running it through gears while stopped (1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1). if theres no problems while not moving, then your 3rd gear syncro is probably gone (3rds usually the first to go).

time to learn to double clutch

Wicked,

Explain the double clutch if you could, i've seen posts in the past but seemed hard to follow along with the process. thks.

truckers used to have to do it back before synchronized transmissions (many modern transmissions, even heavy duty ones, are synchronized).

to downshift:

push in the clutch and shift the tranny to neutral.
release the clutch and rev the engine to the RPM needed for the next gear.
push the clutch back in before the engines RPM decreases back to idle.
select lower gear, release clutch and enjoy!

Mostly for downshifting then...not as useful for the upshift.

i told a new driver that one time and he got this really dumb look and then he said you ain't foolin' me one of them is the brake

no it doesn't do it at a stand still... just when driving. guess i'll have to start double clutching, or just skip 3rd on the down shift lol.

If it's making any whining noises -- especially if it's different in 4th from other gears -- start picking out your replacement transmission.

It could be a simple worn synchronizer, but 3/4 shift problems always make me nervous about loose bearings.

yeah thats kinda what i was afraid of.... its always had a slight whine in 3rd gear. i've dumped way too much money in it lately and it really isn't worth a new tranny to me. so i've been keeping my eye out for a different truck. so the ranger will be going down the road soon. thanks for the help
