I recently purchased a 93 Ranger STX 4x4 5 speed. The truck has an issue somewhere around the transmission.

Problem:
When running the truck is fine as long as the clutch pedal is engaged. After releasing the clutch pedal a sound of metal rubbing together can be heard in any gear including neutral.

The guy I bought it off of thought it was a broken shaft in the tranny. To me it sounds like the clutch. The sound is in the from of the transmission.

Any ideas?

If there was a broken shaft in the transmission it wouldn't move. Sounds more like a bad throwout bearing. You have to take the transmission out to change that and I would do a clutch kit with it.

Drop the tranny. Whens the last time anyone checked the fluid? It'll become clear what it is when you take the trans out, and its gonna have to come out whether its the clutch or trans itsself anyways.

Pull the inspection cover at the bottom on the driverside. See if there is a lot of material down there. The clutch disc may be blown apart and making the noise you say it is making. Reguardless it has to come apart.

Yeah sorry. Didn't think about mentioning that. I will have it on the lift on Friday evening to see what is going on. I will let you guys know. I'm really hoping the transmission isn't shot. But who knows.

Word of advice for you on this. Once you get it out and the top plate of the transmission off for inspection. Look at it close. You had said something about getting a junkyard transmission. Beware of those as they may have the same problems if not worse than yours. Weigh the expense of rebuilding it yourself or having it rebuilt by a shop.
