I have a 97 ranger 2.3 with the M5OD-R1 manual tranny. It whines like crazy and its pretty loud. I have a feeling it could be a bearing since the truck has around 294,000 on it. Anybody know how I can diagnose the issue? I can only hear it while I'm going down the street in gear. It never really changes unless I drive it for 2 or 3 hours when I start to ignore it.

Drain the oil out of the transmission if there is any left and see what it looks like.

Does the noise go away in 4th gear?

Do be aware if you have not completely or correctly reinstalled the sound insulation around the shift lever the M5OD-R1 will make noises like a woodchipper powered by a gas turbine helicopter engine.

THE thing to remember is that the thin factory oil (ATF) does little or nothing to damp the normal gear noises... add to this that the noisiest gears, Reverse and 5th, are directly under the shifter in the transmission.
