Transmission Issues

90 Ranger 4x4 v6 4.0
fluid is not leaking, but it is going somewhere, shifts are all messed up, I have replaced the vacuum manifoid valve, followes directions to to the letter.
when i do see fluid it is black and very thin, even if I just put some in
help this is my work truck, and i need it to pay my bills!

i have checked the coolant, still green and looking good. Engine oil looks good too.
I would appreacite any help ASAP, I would like to get this resolved today, or at least figure out what the issue is, so i can order parts.

assuming auto trans
if fluid is black tranny has problems however you might get lucky by changing fluid and filter pulling pan will also tell you just how bad it is.. if leaking usually the pan gasket, tail shaft seal, seal between transfer case and trans, input shaft seal. lines, or trans cooler in radiator (might have coolant in trans which means radiator would have to be replaced)...
