i have a 1994 4x4 manual. I was driving down the highway today and let off the gas and it felt like it popped out of gear. i pushed in clutch to TRY and put back in fifth and it was like the clutch wasnt even pushed in. Just grinding. so i pulled over came to a complete stop put it in first and no problems on i went.. Got ready to get off the highway and it did it agin. If i stop completley it seems like whatever is happening in 5th gear goes away. No problems shifting into 5th. Does not do it in any other gear.. Im alittle stumped on this one. any help on where to even start would be greatly appreciated.

Also if your at highway speeds and slow down to about 45 mph it WILL NOT do it. Just at speeds 65 and above.:icon_confused::icon_confused:

Sounds to me like a shaft inside the transmission has gotten loose, but I don't know the insides of these transmissions that well.

This should go in the Transmission sub-forum, though.

A moderator will most likely move it for you soon.

Sounds like something in the 5th gear synchro stack let loose or the shift collar is very worn and the teeth are starting to strip off. It could be the nut on the output shaft loosening as well not allowing the collar to engage all the way or letting the synchro do its job.
