Hey everyone
I have a 2003 ranger FX4 Level 2 , my daughters first truck she purchased last wk. was a rare find over here on Vancouver island. Other than the box rusted out and rear leaf spring hangers rusted off , not a bad truck. Fixed the wiring for the left turn signal, replaced the T-case actuator motor and cleaned er up! My question is, what year of the 5r55e will interchange with my kids 2003 auto trans ? Is it only the 01-03 4.0L’s with the 5r55e ,or can I interchange with a later yr ranger say an 2008 4.0L with the 5r55e?
I can’t find much on the web but someone was saying only 01-03 you can swap out trans and the later yrs you would have to modify the electrical connectors. Not sure on this topic?!?!?!

Good place to figure this out is www.car-part.com. Good place to look for a used transmission also. It will list the exact drop in years, just make sure you search "all areas" to get a good interchange.

I do not know all the ins and outs of the different models, but I see right away using that site, that the rangers that year with a 4.0 could have had a 5R44E or a 5R55E. I am going to assume you are sure you have a 5R55E. When I looked up a 2003 4x4 with a 4.0 and a 5R55E, 2001 thru 2005 transmissions popped up. Compared to other types and years, that is a pretty wide range.

Thx for the reply
After some digging around I found the 2001-2011 5r55e trans will fit, as long as it’s the 4.0L and not the 3.0L as the bell housings were different bolt patterns for those engines, and the 16pin connector will match up for plug n play.

There seems to be a break point around 2007. From there up seems to be the same from the interchange. If you get a trans 2007-up, come back and give us the details. Hopefully there are no details to give.

Yes will keep you updated, this trans I’m picking up will be a spare as my daughters original trans is still holding up , very minor slippage every now and then but not enough to warrant a Re & Re.

I’m picking up trans/ t case on Saturday for 100$, guy swapped it out for a 5 spd manual. Perfect working order so he says. I’ll be sure to check the bolt pattern but should match up. Just finished off a few things on the level 2 FX4 , some new shocks front n rears ,diff service 75/140 oil with the friction modifier 4oz for the Torsen gearing and both sides rear leaf springs hangers/shackles. They were completely rusted and broke right off. Frame is solid though. She’s a keeper though. Will need a box as it’s pretty rusted out underneath , left side mounts are gone. Also rear spare wheel crossmember is rotted out , I have a used one from junkyard I picked up for 100$ . When the time comes all swap it all out , but for now she’s my daughter’s daily driver truck. New chrome bumper face bar installed, headlights,4wd actuator motor, t case service ,front and rear chain guide tensioners installed the other day, new tires and sway bars. Other than that not bad shape with 245,000kms.

I thought friction modifier was only for the factory clutch type limited slip?

Yes your right , but the Torsen 8.8” rear end 4.10gears , also needs the friction modifier and 75/140, too as it dosent have clutch packs, it works off of worm gears which are bulletproof compared to the regular LSD clutch packs on the rangers.
Only the Level 2’s from 02-07 came with the Torsen rear end axles 8.8”,31 spline tooth.
The fx4’s non level 2’s from 03-07 only came with the 8.8” 28 spline tooth and non Torsen.

Friction modifier is only for the clutch type limited slip. The worm gears don’t need it. Actually, the only reason it’s recommended for the clutch type is so that they don’t grab as hard.

Most synthetic gear oils that I’ve seen lately come with friction modifier in them.

Yes your right all clutch packs LSD’s require the friction modifier, the Torsen dosent require it as they’re worm gears but Torsen states you can still add it for peace of mind. Yes, Some of the oils do have modifier in them, but it’s not nearly enough as the recommended 4oz you need for your diff. I’d still be adding the modifier especially with an LSD non Torsen.

If I wanted harder lockup, I wouldn’t be adding it at all…
