Buddy of mine wants to put a 4.0L in his Ranger but retain his tranny, if he can. Truck in question is an 87 with the 2.3L and -- I think -- a TK-5, 2wd. Will this work? Can it be made to work?
Nope, won't work, the bolt patterns are totally different. The 4 cyl's have their own pattern, the 3.0 V6 has it's own pattern, and the 4.0, 2.9, and 2.8 V6s all share the same pattern, but they're different from the 4 cyl's and the 3.0.
but it appears to have a removable bell, no? and it was available in the BIIs which were exclusively -- save for the rare diesel option -- v6. so it could be MADE to work.....right?
It can be made to work, once you get a bell housing to fit that particular engine.
I have a '85 ranger with the 2.3 and I'm putting a 2.8 in it. I found a bellhousing online for my TK 5spd and I'm going to put that together without a problem.
So.. just find that bellhousing and you will be golden.
The next question is will that tranny hold up to a 4.0? I am not familiar with the TK5 but the 4.0 is more powerfull than any engine it went behind in a ranger.
