transmission interchange 1998 1997

I can buy a Ranger 3.0l 1997 with a busted automatic transmission.
I can also buy an automatic transmission out of a 2.5l 1998 Ranger.

The 1997 Ranger sits in an autoparts yard for one year now. The owner of the autoparts yard says that only a transmission from a 1997 Ranger fits this1997 3.0l Ranger.

I think they both have the 4R44E transmission. Can it have something to do with the computer?? Would a 4R55E fit? What problems can I expect?

Is there someone who knows this stuff ? Thanks.

A 4R55E will fit and work ** IF ** it will physically bolt in place of the 4R44E. The 3.0 L has a unique bellhousing, a 2.3 or 4.0l tranny doesn't fit .
