transmission ID

I have a 83 2wd drive Ranger,2.3 carb. engine, the transmission going bad and I'm trying to ID whats in it,I think it should be a C3 but the code on the door tag saids W,it also has 11 bolts in the pan without the hump in the pan.If you could help what other transmission would fit without any mods,like a C5, car trans. year and model.That's alot to ask but you guys on here are really sharp when it comes to Rangers.

welcome to the forum. answering questions for people that have done some research is what we are here for.

83 2wd rangers had C3s.

for your options for a new tranny, you could put in another C3, a A4LD although they are widely considered to be the worst transmissions offered in a ranger, or a 4R44E

i dont know what else you would need to make the late model 4R44E work (computer) but it will bolt up.

there was also a c5 that bolts to the 2.3. i have seen very few rangers with a 2.3 and auto. 2 had a c5 and one a c3.
