Transmission help, please

Hello! We have a 1988 Ford Ranger, 2x4, 2.9 engine, automatic. We need to find a used replacement transmission for it. It feels like trying to find a needle in a haystack because it appears most with 2.9 engines are 4x4 or manual trannys and not automatic. *sigh* What other transmissions would slip in there without a problem? Does anyone know? We have priced rebuild and was shocked it would be so much, even if we bring the transmission in out of the truck. It does not like to go in reverse half the time (slipping and at times shaking) and now it is shifting erratically and slipping from time to time in drive. I know something needs to be done soon or it won't move at all. Thought finding a used trans would be the best bet for us financially. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Have you changed the fluid at all? Check car-part.com. It's an a data base of junkyards that you can search and get prices on a trans. That's the cheapest and riskiest route.

The other option is from a reputible place on Ebay or somewhere else online. You get what you pay for. There is a company that does Hi Performance versions of the trans for about 2400 shipped or there are online retailers, like rockauto.com, who have remanufacured ones for close to that.

I would just have your trans rebuilt or junkyard honestly. Junkyard is a huge gamble though.
