I don't have a manual and I need to know what typ of transmission fluid do I need for a 2003 ford ranger 2.3L 2 wheel drive. People are saying mecron ATF. So I need automatic fluid in a 5 speed?? Can someone shed some light please.

Yes, that's true. Ford uses ATF in their light duty (RBV) transmissions...

does it have to be mecron? all i got is master mechanic brans :icon_confused:

Would you risk the life of your transmission to save a couple pennies? I wouldn't run anything but mercron...

It doesn't have to be Motorcraft. Any respectable name ATF that is rated as Dexron III/Mercon compatible will do the job just fine. I think I am running Mobil in mine. I just use whatever we have on tap at work.

Mercron V is a synthetic ATF, and is required in all Ford auto trannies 95 up. For manual trannies, mercron III is all that's needed, but V will work as well. V has a higher heat rating and doesnt break down at the same temp that III does. I use Castrol ATF in my vehicles...

There is no such thing as "Mercon III". Mercon meets Dexron III standards (because they are the same thing), and that is where the confusion comes in.

Yep. Dextron III and Mercon fluids were similar enough the two names were usually carried on the same bottle.

As for Mercon V, I would avoid it myself. I've seen a few M5ODs that began shifting like crap after Merc V was put in, pointing to it possibly being too slippery for the syncros (this in spite of Ford's claim Merc V is backward-compatible).

Ford played some games with the licensing of the name "Mercon" some years back, which means Dextron III/Mercon fluid is now typically known as "Dex/Merc" fluid. Most, if not all auto parts store should have it.

Don't let AllanD hear you say that. He'll get into a huge argument with you and swear up and down that there's such thing as Mercon III. Until you finally ask him to either show proof or STFU, at which point he won't respond any more. Until the next time you say there's no such thing as Mercon III in a new thread.

Oh bulls#!t! He did finally post a pic of a bottle he dug up from his shed or something. He even started a whole thread and everything.

BTW, that man forgets more stuff taking a s#!t, than most people will ever even know. A sheer plethora of knowledge. I met up with him a few times, he's a great guy!

The bottle states Mercon also compatible with Dextron III
