quick question..

transmission fluid for my A4LD, came out of a 93 explorer, fresh rebuild (or will be soon! lol). always used mercon/dextron III.... i was told by someone to replace it w/ Mercon V. can i do this? should i do this?

Absolutely. Merc v meets and exceeds all previous Merc standards making it completely backwards compatible. It is a better oil than the previous Merc oils. additionally i try to avoid dex/merc type fluids for the simple fact that the two standards are so different now that one product cannot meet both the merc v and dex vi standard. the dex/merc fluids never did truly meet either standard, they were simply "close enough"

It's not "completely backwards compatible" when it causes hard-shifting issues on older M5ODs.

Using it in an actual automatic trans (A4LD) is a different situation though, in which case I would say go ahead and use the Merc V. As said above, the Merc V is a better fluid (so good that it's apparently too slippery for a M5OD's synchros).
