Transmission Fluid Question

Hey y'all,

I'm planning on changing the transmission fluid in my 2000 3.0L RWD Ranger, and I've been running into some confusion with what kind of fluid to use. I was planning on using this fluid (Valvoline MERCON V), since it matches the fluid specified in my manual, but a bunch of auto parts store websites say that MERCON, rather than MERCON V, is what you should use.

Is this just a case of the parts stores being wrong? What fluid do y'all use?

You want Mercon V. Do not use "universal" fluid, only use fluid specified as Mercon V. I prefer to use Motorcraft Mercon V as it is what came in your transmission from the factory but as long as whatever your buying specifically says "MERCON V" and not "Dex/merc", "universal", "for all automatic transmissions", or any other crap you should be fine.

Straight Mercon is old stuff that has long since been retired for use in everything but certain transfer cases.
