If you take five or six seconds to search you can find about 10,000 places (not at all an exaggeration) where reference is made to the M5OD's integral bell housing and the different bolt patterns for the various Ranger engines that make it so you need the trans from the correct engine when dealing with an M5OD.
But what the ****, let's make it 10,001 places.
The break down is as follows.
2.8/2.9/4.0
2.3 Lima and 2.5 Lima
3.0
2.3 Duratec.
If you have a 3.0 you need a trans from a 3.0 or it isn't going to fit.
