transmission crossmember bolts seized?

so i started tearing into the truck yesterday to do the clutch...got all the way to the point i was about to drop the crossmember and lower the transmission...and the friggin bolts are seized. i can get the nuts off and i can even get them to spin in the hole...but i can't get them to come out to save my life. i'm guessing there's a metal sleeve in the center of the bushing that is seized to the bolt. i know this is a relatively common problem...how have you guys dealt with it? cut the bolt and replace? or is there another trick?
 
penetrating oil and a torch. acetylene torch if you can get one. spray the whole threaded area. heat the nut.
 
I had the same problem. twice. I swapped an auto to a manual from a donor truck to the recipient truck. I had to hacksaw them off and get replacement bolts from NAPA.
 
Use a jack to lift the crossmember and take some of the pressure off. Squirt some WD40 on each side of the bolt. Thread the nut part way on (so you don't mess up the threads) and tap them suckers out with a hammer. Once you take the pressure off, they should work free.
 
Had to blue wrench mine off. My crossmember is screwed so I'm looking for a solid mount.

Thats stuff works great used it on my old rusty jeep yj when I put the lift on.
 
Get a crossmember that mounts inside the frame rails. You can find them on the older mid 80's rangers.


They don't rust up to sh!t like yours did.

torch the crossmember and brackets off the truck and replace them with the "L" shaped crossmember from a 4x4 (or gen1 Explorer)

No more rubber bushings, no more seized bolts, more ground chearance,

No, you aren't, the 'mid-80's "inside the frame" crossmember runs OVER the catalytic converter and that requires dropping the cat to get the crossmember out

the crossmember I'm talking about sits on the lower flange of the frame on the driver's side and bolts to the OUTSIDE of the passenger side frame rail.

but this crossmember goes UNDER the cat.

I've never had to touch my exhaust system to get my crossmember out. Place a jack under the tranny, remove the mount from it to the x-member, then unbolt and slide/lever it out from underneath the truck. I would HATE to have to remove my x-member to work on exhaust... it's by FAR the better option for me.


Hmm... But now I'm curious about the one you're talking about. I know there's a few 4x4 rangers at the local junkyard that have been sat on their side...
 
I had a trans. mount bolt siezed in the sleeve when I took my trans. down.

Ended up cutting it out w/ a recip saw, and buying a 6" piece of 3/8 pipe and cutting it to legnth and it should work fine.

The 10mm bolt will fit just fine in the pipeand the O.D. of the pipe fit in the hole for old sleeve.
