I have a 99 4x4 ranger with a 3.0 and the 4R44E auto transmission. It runs fine for a while after starting it when its cold but it doesnt seem like it wants to shift into 3rd gear sometimes when i have been running it for a while and it is hot. The tranny is only a few months old and the fluid looks fine. Ive had it into the shop a few times to see if someone could figure this thing out but i havent had any luck. I was wondering whether an auxillary cooler might help it shift better. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Adam

An extra cooler can never hurt but I don't think it will help your problem. Even with an extra cooler it would still act the same. When you or anyone ads a transmission cooler it always goes in addition to the factory one. The extra cooler would go inline after the factory cooler which is inside your radiator. I'm thinking you DO have a cooler inside your radiator right? Is your engine running a normal temp? If its running hot this will increase the temp of your tranny as well. Also, is your radiator clean and flowing ok?

Well im pretty sure my radiator is working fine. My engine temp is normal. I didnt do the transmission myself because im not real sure of what im doing in there. I've had it looked at several times and a few adjustments make it run fine for a day or so but after that its back to normal. I just dont know what else to do to fix the problem.

If the transmission is not shifting correctly, and it is a new unit that a shop installed, take it back and tell them to call you when the fix it. If you paid them to install it new, or rebuild it it should be under some warranty. Don't keep driving it or they will fight you on the warranty.

Even if putting a bigger/second/auxillary cooler on it takes care of the problem, it is really only covering up the issue. Something is wrong.

Yeah thats what i think im gonna end up doing. I have a 1 year unlimited miles warranty so it'll go back. I know the guy and he's done everything he can do help me out so I wont get screwed in the deal.
