When traveling any speed over about 10MPH a kind of clicking can be heard coming from the transmission. I jacked the rear end up and had someone spin the tires and it sounds like its coming from the very front of the driveshaft/the very rear of the tranny. It is a 2.3L manual 2WD. Not really sure what it is, speedometer sensor? joint on the driveshaft? checked the tranny fluid and it has plenty. I put a new clutch and all that good stuff in about two years ago and haven't had a problem since, until now. Any help is much appreciated!

Also it doesn't seem that the noise gets any louder or faster as you speed up, or as you rev the engine.

Well, if you suspect the VSS, pull it out and try spinning it. That should be an easy one to eliminate. Does it do it in neutral as well as in gear?

Yes, whether it is in neutral or gear it does it. Pushing the clutch down also doesn't do anything. It almost sound like a very quiet grinding. (pretty hard to describe)

What happened to the good old days when these forums were bumping like crazy with people and everyone was helpful? Ever since all the issues with courts or whatever the site has gone downhill.

But i want to thank loco for the reply. Thanks man gonna get under there and check the VSS soon. Also it stops the noise when i accelerate.

grab the U-joint and jostle it around....see if its loose. U-joints click/grind when they are going, and you can feel it when you move them. If its in that tail piece, its gotta be the U-joint or the VSS i believe. Makes sense it would stop when u accel because it pushes the loose U-joint areas together momentarily and gets rid of slop.

Nah the drive shaft or u-joint isn't loose when i pull on it. I'm gonna get into the VSS tomorrow and if I don't find anything there I'll probably drop a few new u-joints in since they don't cost that much, that would eliminate that.

Ujoints are tight and sound fine, VSS looks fine. The noise is getting worse and it seems to be a low pitched hum at around 30-40mps. The rear end has oil up to the fill hole and the fill plug had just a bit of gear shavings on it. Other than taking the rear end pumpkin cover off and looking at the gears I'm not sure what else to do. Note: when in gear if you push it back and forth there is a click/pop that can be heard in the transmission/front of driveshaft. * off to autozone to get some sealant and gear oil

Took the rear end apart, gears look perfect and very little if any shavings. I'm thinking maybe a wheelbeaing or something in the brakes?
