Hello all,

Recently I have experienced a new chattering when engaging the clutch. The truck is a 2WD ‘85 with 2.8 engine and TK5 trans. When I first heard it, initial thought was throw out bearing. Since I had the trans dropped I went ahead and put new clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and CSC with bearing. Got everything hooked back up, changed the fluid, and it still chatters. It only does it when I’m already moving or when decelerating in gear, so it doesn’t when starting in first.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m at a dead end.

(also, here is a picture of the “Danger Ranger” as my friends like to call it)

Grease/oil contamination, warped flywheel, damaged disk

Even after all of these things were replaced?

Misaligned clutch could also be the issue.. if you weren't careful or something wasn't installed correctly than contamination could be possible.

Did you clean the flywheel and pressure plate really well?

They typically have a coating to prevent rust while sitting on a shelf and/or shipping on a slow boat from China.

I kept then clutch alignment pin as long as possible, and everything meshed in well.
I did clean them both very well with brake cleaner to get the coating off. I failed to mention I can feel the chatter at the base of the shifter. One thing a friend told me is that it’s possible it could be the transmission mount. Any thoughts on that?

I think you would have noticed a bad trans mount during installation.

Get under the truck with a pry bar and see if you can move the mount.

The mount did look a bit worn out, probably factory one. I honestly didn’t think much of it at the time.

You would notice a bad mount on take off or when you torque it up a bit.

What would it feel like?

Most likely a clunk or clunking.

would probably happen on acceleration... and upon deceleration

or maybe feel like your trans wanted to leave your truck frame

Could it be in the early stages of failing and just rattling around? I feel like a large clunk would come after some time of failing

Anything is possible...

You will just have to go check it

Something else to note...

If it is a different sound then when you replaced your transmission. Double check your work.

Is everything tight?

Is the exhaust hitting something?

ETC...

It is the same sound as before. It can’t be the exhaust because I had to cut the section out near the crossmember in order to get it out
