hello im new to TRS. I have an 03 Ranger Fx4 and I cant figure out what is wrong with my 4x4. A year ago i tore the boot of the halfshaft, where the bearings are located, while offroading. So i took the halfshaft off. i drove it about 2 months without the shaft and kept in the garage. A couple days ago i drove it with the halfshaft off, i got a new boot put the ball bearings in place and replaced my halfshaft. before doing so i rotated the free T-case wheel and it spun freely. thinking it felt fine. i also noticed a slight leak on the T-case. After putting the halfshaft on I drive forward about 2 feet and the T-Case gives a loud snap/grinding noise and it continues doing so for every 2 feet. i took it off rechecked the bearings (on the halfshaft), spun the T-case wheel (it was free,no snaps) and replaced it. I get the same results. keeps snapping. I moved it 15 feet back and 15 forward tried the 4low(the noise was quieter but still snapped) and 4hi same result. Any help? :icon_confused:

what kind of terrain are you trying this on? are you trying to drive it in 4 wheel drive? does it make noise in 2 wheel drive?

tcase

i drove it on my driveway. i cant drive it out of the driveway without hearing the awful sounds of it snapping. With the shaft off it drives smoothly but when i put the halfshaft back on and it turns the tcase, it snaps.

but are you driving in 4wd? or 2wd?

it snaps in both 4wd and 2wd with the shaft on only.

Sounds like the front driveshaft CV joint is binding. Probably need to replace the shaft.

i had a friend drive it back a couple feet today while watching the T-case. it seems fine for a half turn then pressure builds up and it snaps shaking the tcase and the Transmission. ill checkout the cv-joint tommorow with a local repair shop. thanks 77'cj7.
