'98 4.0 automatic- When I pull away from a dead stop it's like a catch in the drivetrain somewhere. Previous owner thought it was slack in the chain in the tranfercase and had the case replaced but obviously it didn't work. whats up?!?

I think I am currently experiencing this on my 94...would be nice to know what it is. Also an automatic.

If the truck is going "clunk" like right after you start off its most likely that you need to grease up the slip yoke on the drive shaft. Its pretty easy to do. just have a zip tie/tie wrap ready. How ever you want to call it to replace the steel one you end up having to cut off or bend badly on the boot.

probaly wrong but...it might be axle wrap ive been watching some youtube videos and it really locks up the driveshaft when its bad

There's not that big if any "clunk". It's just like there is actual slack in a chain and when you accerate it pulls up the slack then goes in a split second...

Could be a ridiculous amount of play in your driveline. Specifically your diff.

Park your truck on level ground, block the wheels and put the parking brake on. Put the tranny in neutral and crawl under.

Grab the driveshaft and turn it back and forth. My Ranger has enough play that's it's almost a half turn from when it hits something CW to when it hits something CCW, my Explorer on the other hand has about 1/8 turn.

My Explorer rides mint, and my Ranger does exactly what your description seems like. When I take off from stopped the motor starts turning first, then the slack is taken up, then I start moving.

IF you have a normal amount of play on the rear driveshaft, put it in 4x4, and try grabbing the front driveshaft and turning it. If you have play in the front driveshaft, but little in the rear, then you could very well be right about a loose/damaged chain.

The chain only drives the front axle.

You can only get a lurch at takeoff from a slack chain in say... an aerostar...

Infact I have one with a dying T-case that does exactly that.
