Ive got a 2001 ranger with a 4.0 automatic and the borg warner 1354 electric shift i was driving the other day in a field and lost traction in the soft sand. after coming to a stop and shifting into 4 high i pulled on out just fine for about 5 feet then the transfer case made a noise like the chain is jumping teeth on the gears now every time i engage the transfer case it does it once a rotation. any ideas on the cheapest way to fix it right? or should i fork out the 650 for a rebuilt transfer case and bolt a new one in?

First of all, you need to figure out what is wrong to fix it. Second of all, 650 for a transfercase is crazy. The transfercases in rangers rarely fail and almost always have another 200K miles left in them when they end up at the junkyard.

The cheapest way to fix it right is to put in a used one from a junkyard. You should be able to get one for 100 or so from a junkyard or for less from some one here on this forum (shipping might hurt though.)

yeah i havent broken it open yet because its my daily driver for now but i did check out a junkyard near my house in columbia sc and they wanted 650 for the right case for my truck and thats used and i found a place in spartanburg that sells rebuilds for 450 still thats way too much for me to spend unless i REALLY have to

I just swapped a manual Tcase into my truck two weeks ago. I have my electronic tcase sitting in my garage now and i have no use for it. If you want it, you can have it for 50 plus shipping. It was working just fine when i took it out. The reason I swapped it is for the novelty of having a manual case. Now i got a manual tranny, tcase and hubs. PM me if you might be interested.

To mwood1985 - check your hubs first. Mine went out, had the same symptoms you are describing. I ended up replacing the Ford autos with Warn Manuals from Amazon.com -$185 to the door with the spindle nut conversion kits.

To metalmacguyver -did you sell that TC yet? How many miles on it?

No hubs on a 2001.
