transfer case leak?

so was looking under my truck and noticed fluid on my t-case. checked the trans fluid and its full so i went back to t-case and the fluid seems to be comeing from the front axel seal ie. theres little driping but it wont leave a stain on the ground....but i cant find how to replace it on here.. is it the same as the output shaft seal?

When you say you checked the trans fluid, do you mean the ATF in the trans, or the ATF in the t-case? Because the fluids are kept separated from each other and the t-case could still be really low if you just checked the trans fluid.

Are you refering to the pinion seal on the front differential that is leaking? If so you just removed the pinion nut and flange and pop a new seal in.

just checked the t-case fluid and its LOW couldnt feel any when i put my finger in and its leakin where the front drive shaft comes out of the t-case....should i put some fluid in it and get it home an not drive it till its fixed or is it ok to drive it around cause im not useing the 4X4

Front output seat on the transfercase is leaking. Get a new seal, remove the yoke, pry out the seal, install a new seal, reinstall the yoke. Be sure to check the yoke for grooving/worn spots that could be causing the leak.

This is NOT an emergency.

Fill it back up and check it periodically.

Fix it when you have the time and money and tools.

Seriously. Fill it, drive it, check it.


It could have taken months to get that low on ATF, even years.

i fig it wasnt a huge issue my only thought is... with it being low have an affect on the rear output i.e. seals and bearings and such not being lubed as they should be or will it have no effects

my transfer case on my '96 4x4 manual is leaking from where the two case halves seal together. I dried the leaking fluid off and no leakage seems to come from the seals for the driveshafts. How hard is it to drop the transfer case , split it and re-sillicone it ? which silicone do you recommend?

Moderate difficulty level. It's pretty easy to pull the tcase, the hardest part is keeping everything lined up inside the case itself when you put the two halves back together. If your pretty mechanically inclined, should be no problem, just plan on extra time on case it fights you. You will need a big socket for the rear output (think it's 30mm) and it's a good idea to replace the seal there while you have it apart.

Remember silicon doesn't bond to existing cured silicon - you need to get ALL the existing silicon off the halves before applying new or you just make the situation worse.

My biggest challenge was rear nut is put on with gazillon ft.lbs of torque, lock tight and rust and I had no way to stop the transfer case from spinning.

If doing again, I would have broke it lose while still in truck.​
