First, I did use the search engine and found one thing similar to my issue, but it was never answered.

98 ranger!

When I engage my 4WD, I noticed it takes a bit longer to engage than normal. Sometimes 6 or 7 seconds to engage and sometimes longer when disengage. I've had the let the truck sit while turned off to get the 4WD to completely disengage before. Then while in 4HI or LOW, I go into reverse and turn the wheel to turn, I have to jump on the gas to get it to move ( only while turning in reverse ). It turns fine going forward and the transfer case whines loudly in both 4hi and 4low and in HI it takes forever to shift to the next gear. It all goes away once out of 4WD and everything runs fine.

Any thoughts?

Well at first I would not turn anyway to take your truck out of 4wheel drive as you can bind everything up if you are on a high traction surface. And if your t case is whining the only thing you can do is change the fluid and if it does not go away the transfercase might be on it's way out.
