SO, I inherited a '93 Ranger (4.0L, 4WD). See this thread : http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133008

Anyway. Found a whole bunch of receipts so I am getting more of an idea of the shape this thing is in.

One of the recipts is from a few years ago, when the transfer case blew, and was replaced with a new (used) one.

The note on the reciept says, quote,

"Vehicle is in 4wheel drive high. electrical part of 4wd shift mechanism inop."

The truck has manually locking hubs, which are unlocked, but... does anyone have any clues as to what this note might be referring to? And also, what's the danger of driving around in 4WD HIGH all the time, even with the hubs unlocked? Aside from gas mileage and wear and tear?

Sorry for n00b questions. Thanks in advance.

it means either your 4 wheel drive switch is bad, your controller thats mounted behind the drivers side jump seat if its a extended cab or the motor or wiring is bad.

there is a test procedure using the controller behind the seat, i forget how tho, just search for it on here, there is a button and a light to diagnosis.

It probably means the shift motor on the transfer case. If the hubs are unlocked you can drive it around in 4-hi all the time and not damage anything as long as the front diff has enough lube in it. You probably won't even notice a drop in MPG.

Great, thanks. I may replace it some day but there's a long list of things to fix so I'm trying to prioritize (especially with winter coming and me not having a garage).
