My 87 Ranger 2.9 auto tran with manual hubs. The transfer case doesn't seem to go all the way into 4 high. If I disconnect the shift linkage at the transfer case, should I be able to feel a detent when moving the lever on the transfer case ? Thanks Ken

So 4 high is all the way up ? And then down 1 detent ? Thanks Ken

2 high is all the way up, then pull back one detent to 4high, then neutral (push left on the lever slightlyas you pull back into neutral), and last all the way back on the lever is 4low.

Loosen BOTH shifter mounting bolts

Push the lever as far forward as it will go move the
"plate" so it just barely DOESN'T touch the front of the lever.

I usually stick a wooden match between the lever and the plate
as a "guage", Then tighten the small (9/16" head) bolt first then
tighten the BIG (1-1/8") bolt.

your shifter gate plate is probably misadjusted.
there is a "block" you have to shift around to get from 4Hi
and into Neutral and 4Lo and if the plate is misadjusted it
won't let you fully engage 4Hi.
