Hey guys, I am doing my recon to resolve my non-functioning (2003) 4x4 system, and I am looking at possibly having to replace the control module.
I have looked at dozens of different 4x4cm's, new, used and reman's, all claiming to be for an 01-04 Ranger, and they all have wildly different Ford part numbers?!
The Ford part number on my current CM is: 1L54-7H417-AE.
Is there a spreadsheet or something that shows what part numbers are compatible with my truck??

I don't know about all the different numbers, but Dorman 599-252 is supposed to replace 1L54-7H417-AE

If Dorman has gotten into it and makes a replacement, that is a sure sign they have a high failure rate and they figure they can make some money on replacements. Here's a link. https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-84293-599-252.aspx

I ended up finding a used OEM one of the same P/N on ebay and bought it, problem solved.

What were your symptoms? I am currently chasing a T-Case issue, as in it won’t shift.

Pulled the motor and it moves both directions with 12 volts applied, so I put it back in place. The switch seems to do nothing and there is no blinking 4x4 lights on the dash. This is on a 1999 Ranger with the 3.0L engine.

to the OP's question (might be of some use to you to AK)...
https://www.fordpartscatalog.com find the part, click "vehicle fitment" and it will show you all the vehicles that one part interchanges with... as far as all the part numbers for that part only if it was replaced by a newer version would there be a "discontinued see xyz" line you could drill through all those to get to each part number.

I think the most common thing is the motor seizes up and then in the seized state it fries the control module which is why most guys get to replace both at the same time.... but I am not a 4x4 guy - only own and wrench on two different 2wd's.

Same as yours, I replaced the 4x4cm with the exact same model number ($90 used from ebay) and i'm back in business. I was amazed to find how complex that control unit is, the case opens right up and it looks like a mini PC motherboard in there!
I did also replace my motor with a shiny new one, but the old ugly rusty one worked fine, so I now have a spare.

Thanks Gents. The original T-case motor was locked up for sure. And that might have been what took out the module.

While driving it around the neighborhood tonight both high and low 4wd lights started blinking and it wouldn’t actually go into 4wd.

I hate throwing money at things, but it seems this issue might, or might not require both parts.

Thanks Brain! I will go through this today and see if the one used one I found locally will cross over. Most wrecking yards up here don’t have anything this old.

That's kind of a stitch, my 3 close yards don't have anything 4th gen - never seen a one... all pre 98 here. I have seen some 2008-2010 pontiac stuff (my daily is a 2006 GM), but nothing Ford that new.
