After dropping the trans (88 ext cab, 2.9 4x4), I noticed a loose bolt on the front of the transfer case. Its the bottom bolt on the bottom/front of the Tcase under the transmission/transfer case connection bolts. Its loose and spins freely like its not connected to anything inside the transfer case. Without damaging the Tcase, can I open it up to locate the problem? Thanks, Ken.

This is one of the bolts that holds the front bearing retainer plate on the t-case?

Likely stripped threads.

You can probably find a machinist who can helicoil the stripped thread for you.

Is this a serious problem? It doesn't seem to affect the driving of the truck, kinda noisey ratteling. What about opening the transfer case? Will I harm anything? I'm really curious to look inside. Thanks, Ken

loose bolt

I have a loose bolt on the bottom front part of my transfer case, very bottom below the input shaft and transmission connection bolts. It just spins around like its not connected to anything. Can I pull the cover and check it out without doing any major damage. I'd hate to remove the face plate and not be able to get it my Tcase back together. Thanks, Ken

can you take a pic of it does it go into the case or is it like a mount bolt without a nut

I'm not sure what it is. It goes into the transfer case and it just spins around like its not connected to anything. I'm dropping the tranny to try and locate some ratteling noises when you're driving down the road. I'm pretty sure one of the sounds is the throwout. I'm guessing this loose bolt is the other culprit. I just don't want to mess something up if I open up the Tcase to get a closer look.

It isn't always easy to get that front retainer back on, because the planetary assembly is mounted to it with a circlip that's INSIDE the case, so the plate doesn't just come off
by itself.

from the looks of it it is a busted bolt is there a hole on the other side of the case I am sure it has nothing to do inside the transfer and if it is holding oil squirt some rtv in there to keep it from rattlin unless the bolt goes all the way through with a nut for a mount or something if it works dont fix it
