taking trans out of 94 ranger and i have drive shaft crossmember clutch line speed cable and reverse switch out also all 6 bolts that hold the trans to the engine block.......how do i get the trans to seperate i managed to get the bottom lose by hammering a flathead in there but cant get the top to seperate anyone have this issue before

Starter? Put a jack under it and raise/lower it.

Ussualley they get into slop mode after everything is pulled out

Are you removing an automatic or a manual? Just finished a clutch replacement and had to remove my five speed manual... it had eight bolts four from trans to engine, four from engine to trans...

its a 5 speed and i finally got seperation but the damn y pipe is in the way and i have succesfully stripped the last not that holds the y pipe to the manifold...........any ideas how to remove the stripped nut....cant really fit anything up in there

By y-pipe I assume you mean part of the exhaust line?? (* the only parts I removed were the drive shaft, transmission cross member and the actual transmission *) It takes some work to wiggle it out... The way we did it was to support it with a jack, back it out and lower as needed.

yea it bolts to the manifold and runs under the trans and i have tried to use the jack and back it out but the bottom of the trans is hitting the y pipe and if i raise it to clear the y pipe the top of the trans hits the floor.....we had to remove the y pipe last time i was just hoping we didnt have to do it this time

thats odd mine has 6 bolts going from trans to engine

I'd double check to make sure... It is entirely feasible that it only has six bolts.

Is the pipe directly under or more to the side? My exhaust pipe ran alongside and I was able to work around it... though it was a pretty tight fit and took some jiggling to get the tranny out, the stickler for us was the shifter location would hit the bottom of the cab and had to be "pried" past. It was a lot easier going in.

it runs under the trans it goes between the trans and the other crossmember

Mike, what engine are you dealing with? Sierra has a 4-cylinder, I get the impression that you are working on a V6, which means totally different animals.

Last time I was in your situation I chopped the bolt with a hack saw. I have also cut the Y-pipe off, but I was planning to install headers on that job too. I have also had some good luck drilling the bolt out from the other side of the manifold flange. Lots of ways to do it.

i got the v6 4.0 liter and i got the y pipe out but still cant get the trans out......it did move more though but i still cant free it

You are hung up on the radius arm cross member now. You kinda have to get the rear of the trans up in the air, nose pointed down, and she clears. It's kind of an odd angle to pull a transmission out at.

Once you get it out take a hammer to the firewall pinch weld and bend it upward, out of the way. It makes the passage in and out much easier.
