was on my way home from work today and i came to a stop and my truck died. I put it back in park to start it up and it fired up no problem. put it in drive and jumped into gear and started boggin out right aways, then is slipped out of gear and i gave it some gas trying to drive and my rpm climbed to like 4500 and i was barely crawling anywhere, this continued for about five seconds and i let off and then it shifted into first very rough. All the gears feel like they are there but it takes a bit to get into them. Wondering if any one could help in deciding whether the trans is shot or if its possibly a shitty torque converter? dont wanna buy a new trans just to find its a torque, but the other hand dont wanna pull it all out and replace the torque, put it back together and find out the trans is shot aswell. Any ideas? BTW: i have a 93 ranger 4x4 with a 4.0 and a a4ld trans

im not too good with the a4lds but the fact that u said it died coming to a stop seems it didnt downshift when correctly.

this may be a stupid question but have you checked fluid level? could be low, or burnt smelling and if so time for a rebuild.

i checked the fluid once i got home and level was perfect. fluid was a bit burnt but not black.

The only reason an auto trans vehicle should ever really stall is if the TC clutch is locked. It's possible to have it happen without that condition, but not likely. The converter should slip first. It does sound like its not downshifting properly though.
