hey
i am going to look at and prob pick up another ranger this saturday.its a manual.he says he has a ticking noise coming from the transmission and he beleives it is the input shaft bearing.so i have two things to ask.one is that does this sound like a input bearing? or what else could it be.and also if it is the input bearing how hard is it to replace.looks like all you have to do is take the plate off then the seal and snap ring and the bearing comes out.is it pressed on to the shaft?
thanks
ryan

o and its a 86 ranger 2.9 l .so im gonna assume its a fm145-4x4 and electric transfer case

transmission has to come completely apart to get the input shaft bearing off.

i wouldn't say a ticking noise is from the bearing.. they usually whine or growl..

but we also need a better description of the noise..

is it a steady tick tick tick whenever the engine is running and clutch is let out? does it go away with the clutch pushed in?

can you feel a thump thump thump in the gear shift while driving? which gear?

could be a lot of things.. its up to you to give us the information to narrow it down

yeahh.thats the problem dont have the truck yet, picking it up saturday.so i jsut want to be prepared for the problems that might lye within.i dont have much money if its a expensive part .he said it started out as a grinding noise and then turned to a ticking noise.http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/1749852363.html
thats teh truck.he has a lot of new clutch parts in there so idk .

whoops. i spaced and thought we were talking about a 93.. i don't know if the input shaft bearing is accessible on that trans.. but i do know its NOT on an m5od lol.

you'll just have to give more details when you get the truck
