trans switch

I was curious if it would possible to switch out a manual trans to an automatic. If so, would it still be possible if the manual came out of a 4x4 and switched with a auto trans out of a 2 wheel drive or would I need to find a 4x4 auto trans...

you can use a 2wd drive tranny granted youll be removing your front driveshaft, installing a 2wd drive tranny and changing our rear driveshaft and losing the function of 4wd. youll need to change computers, remove the clutch pedal and steering column (to be able to use the automatic shift select lever.)

I want to keep the 4x4...I figured i would need a auto trans out of a 4x4 ranger, i had a 2wd trans i would have been able to get for cheap, but from what you have just told me it wouldnt work...so a 4x4 auto trans will work?..I plan on a floor shifter so i wont have to replace the steering column...I had not realized the computer would need to be replaced also?

im going to do a 4wd auto to manual swap, you have a torque converter lockup in the tranny and that has to be operated by the computer, you may have to change/modify the wiring harness. also i dont believe a manual flywheel will bolt up to the torque converter, youll prob have to have an auto flywheel as well. what engine/tranny are you trying to use? i havent seen a floor shifter auto in/for a ranger.

I have a 4.0..I am unsure on which 4.0 it is...I do not know what trans i will need...I have all intentions to research this and make it happen..I really appreciate the info. I just needed to know if it is possible..I am giving the truck to my girlfriend...she really likes the manual and can drive it quite well...she still has trouble though on inclines and over time i know she will perfer an auto...

i had problems but once i fig out the kinks i love a stick and cant stand an auto. my a4ld shifts like crazy and never when i need it to, so im going stick.
