im gettin an 87 ranger 4x4 with 2.8 , 5 spd manual. i have an 89 bronco II 4x4 with the 2.9, 5 spd manual. both have push button 4wd. can i swap the trans and transfer case out of the bronco II and bolt it up to the ranger motor , or is it a little more than that ??

2.8, 2.9 and 4.0 all share a bell pattern.

Your 87, which by the way, doesn't have a 2.8 unless someone other than Ford put it there, has an FM145. Your Bronco has an FM146. The 146 is longer, so you will need to find the correct length rear drive shaft. Something out of a truck with an A4LD, or a 98+ Ranger with the same body options as your truck will work nicely. The 98+ will need the rear flange changed though.

tey said its got a 2.9 in it but he also mentioned a carb. what engine should be in an 87 ranger 4x4 xlt with a 5 speed??

2.8 was carbed, 2.0 was carbed, 2.3 was TBI (in 87) and 2.9 had multiport electronic injection. Look under the hood. It is absolutely impossible to mistake a 2.9 for anything else because the top of the intake has "2.9L Electronic Fuel Injection" cast right into it.

It is however possible in 87 that you have a carbed 4-cylinder 4x4. If that is the case, then your swap may become more difficult.
