I just lost 1st gear in my 92 Ranger. My question is what other Rangers have the same transmition. I looked in the tech section and if I understand it they are the same for all Rangers from 91 to 2000 as long as they are 4.0. Can I use one from a smaller engine as long as it is 6cylinder?

No. The bolt patterns are different on all motors except; 2.9 and 4.0 are the same pattern, but there are differences in starter and clutch in the standards. I don't know about the autos.
Good luck,

Richard

Thanks for the quick response, I didn't notice that I hadn't said what trans. I have, it is a 5 speed. So it sounds like I need to make sure it is a 4.0 just to be sure it will match. I'm thinking that I will look for a newer Ranger that might have less wear and tear.

2.9 and 4.0 are the same bell. The flywheels and starters are physically different, but as long as you keep the 4.0 block plate on the transmissions are interchangeable. The gear ratios are different though. The 4.0 trans is far more common than the 2.9 trans though.

I'll save you the headache....I have 2 rebuilt transmissions in my shop. PM me if you may be interested. I live by Peoria, Il.

I tried to send a PM. First time so not sure if I dd it right. I'm interested depending on the price?

(Just picking....hope it works out!)

Trans Problem

Exploin94, I went to the Pick n pull and the Ranger they had was 2.9 and trans. was a little rough, other yards in this area are near your price and they could be more junk. I am more interested in your offer and if you are willing to meet some were in between that would save me some traveling and gas. I am going to start taking my trans out today.

There are two different manual transmissions used on the 2.9 from 1988-1992

The Mazda built transmission that the same mechanically as the 4.0 trans used 1991-on

And then there's the Mitsubishi FM146 that I wouldn't touch with a 10foot pole
(or an 11foot hungarian)

The Mitsubishi FM146 has a bolted on bellhousing and a sheet steel bottom cover.
Avoid this transmission like you'd avoid asking for blood transfusions at an AIDS clinic.

Thanks for the input, the trans in the Ranger was a Mazda but it look to abused so I'm going to take Explorin94 up on his offer less worries about more problems because his are rebuilt. I just have to meet up with him to make the exchange.

Thanks to Explorin94 I have a rebuilt transmission in my truck. Did an exchange with him last weekend and got the trans in Monday evening and finished it Tuesday. Had an issue when I was moving my Goldwing out of the way to get my truck out of the garage my foot slipped and pulled a muscle in my right leg. I was just able to take the truck around the neighbor hood today. The trans seams to work better than the old 1 did even before 1st gear went out. THANKS again to Explorin94 for the rebuilt trans!!!:icon_cheers:
