trans not down shifting

i have a 94 4x4 ranger 4.0 auto. trans. . it would not downshift, and when put in reverse it stalled motor. now i have reverse. no trouble with shifting up. drained fluid and found no debri in pan. what could be the problem. truck has 144000 miles.
