Ok so I have a 94 4.0 4x4 5 spd manual and i NEED a new trans. What will interchange with this trans? I know its a M5OD-r1. so what years and engine sizes will go on there just the same? And when you drop it is it best to put it in nuetral and remove the shifter or in a gear?
thanks

Just make sure you get a 4x4 tranny. 1991-2000 4.0 4x4 tranny's would be the best and most common. Leave the shifter in neutral.....just leave it in neutral or you'll have a "stuck shifter" when you put it all back together.:)

The only thing that will fit is a trans off of a 4.0. I'm sure that the trans for a 2.9 would also fit (the motor at least), although it probably wouldn't hold up to a 4.0.

2wheel drive 2.9's used the same Mazda trans, but the 4wheel uses the weaker tranny.

I would just forget about using a 2.9 trans. A 4.0 one shouldn't be hard at all to find, and you know it'll work and be strong enough. It just HAS to come off of a 4.0 truck WITH 4wd. The 4.0 was/is available from 1990-present.

For a 4WD M5OD, leave it in gear. DO NOT remove the stub-shaft and you won't have any problem with it being stuck in gear. But you will be able to rotate the input shaft from the back while trying to install it in the clutch.

There is no need to remove the stub shaft. Leave it in.

Of course the stick has to come out if you have less than 18 inches body lift.

haha well my bl is ony 12 inchs makg. So when i put in my new trans should i leave it in gear or in nueutral, as i will probably remove those three bolt that hold the shifter in the trans to get the trans in.
Thanks

When you actually remove the shifter, leave it in neutral(mine is 4x4 also). Because if you leave it in gear, and put it all back together, you'll find that you won't be able to move the shifter. If not you'd have to manually shift the rail with a pick or something, which is not easy or fun when you have no idea what the hell you've done.

any M50D-R1 will interchange.....even the newer M50D-R1HD's out of the late model 4.0 SOHC will directly bolt up to the 4.0 OHV......i know this because when I did my auto to manual swap, I used a '03 FX4 Level II M50D-R1HD and there wasn't a single problem with it bolting up or anything else....

were all the elec. connections, slave hook up and all that mumbo jumbo correct and everything was good? Since your s was auto did you have to get a new harness or anything?

bump...

Also looking for answer to 94STXRanger question...

You "should" get a transmission harness for a 4.0 manual truck. I had problems getting my back up lights to work after the swap. You can make the transfer case and starter work by splicing the auto harness, but I would have rather had a manual harness.

I am going to pull a manual harness for my BII when I do the swap.

Whenever you put in a manual transmission, you should leave it in gear so you can rotate the front input shaft so the splines on the flywheel line up. If it is in neutral and you try turning the rear output shaft, the front wont turn.
