Ok, got in truck this morning to go to work. Shifted into reverse and heard a pop sound, truck "felt" like it had shifted into reverse. However, when I stepped on gas, it went no where.
Put the truck into drive and it would move forward, but not backward. Got out and checked the fluid, was a little low, but shouldn't have caused this problem. Went a head and topped off the fluid, didn't have anything better to do. :icon_confused:

Got back in truck, still no reverse. Pushed it out of the driveway and got back in. Shifted into drive and headed to work. During the drive to work I manually shifted through the gears. All forward gears seem to be working fine; 1,2,3,OD. Just no reverse. Got to work and parked on a hill, to ease leaving at the end of the day.

Any ideas, of what would cause this particular problem? I haven't made any checks other than what I have mentioned and to ensure transmission fluid wasn't leaking out from under the truck.

Thanks.

DEAD!!! It still goes forward!!! lol

Really, don't have the funds to do a swap right now. Was hoping to repair this one. If need be, will be choosing parking spots to match handicap. :icon_bounceblue:

Ok, I am not a transmission person, no kidding!!! However, I got a few years under my belt and can figure things out. It takes me a bit longer than it did when I was forty, but I can get'er done.
From what I am reading, it sounds like the reverse belt broke :dunno: (that was the pop) and the reason why I have all other gears. So this is a blessing, in that, I can still drive forward without any problems.

I can not be without a truck for long, so will start the investigation on getting parts for this tranny, swaping it out with another automatic or swapping it out with a 5 speed (as mentioned below). :icon_confused:

If anyone has ANY (supportive) comments, please post them. :icon_thumby:

Best thing I can tell you to do, and possibly the easiest, is to swap in another Auto. Pick it up from a junkyard and have at it.

Thanks, just noticed there is a whole thread dedicated to the A4LD tranny, so have posted there also.

Just wondering how hard would it be to convert to a manual tranny? Time and money. Would it be worth it? More power? Better gas milage? This is a daily driver, to and from work. I use it in a side business of general contracting (handyman) also, not to hard on it.

Its just a swap of all the parts out of a manual version of your truck, basically. Search around on the transmission forum and you'll find everything you need.

You won't get more power but you will most likely have something more reliable. I prefer manuals to autos so maybe I'm biased even though I drive an auto, haha.

If you swapped in another auto, you'd be up and running much faster for cheaper....but autos wear out...of course manuals do to but you know what I mean....
The bottom line is, money and time are the only two things in your way to a better set up in my opinion.

I have to agree with you, I like manuals better than auto. However, I haven't owned a manual transmission vehicle in about......thirty years!!! :dunno:

So all I am looking at is time and money and I can have a better product...lets see, what are the two items I am short on? Oh yeah, they are time and money!!! :icon_rofl:

Well at least it still goes down the road, I guess I have some time to make up my mind and see where it leads me. Maybe I should go talk to my wife, she is good at making up my mind for me!! :icon_surprised:

Thanks.

The one thing that keeps puzzling me is this: ALL forward gears work!!!

I doubt the rev band snapped its cast iron, but you could have poped the servo cap off or the gasket blewout.

to check drop pan and remove filter, the servo cap is stamped steel w/ 4 10mm bolts.

if it is in tact the band may have broke and or piston seal rings blown.

you should hope its not the band, its at the back of the trans and req.s full disassembly.

That is kind of what I was thinking. If it is the just the servo, I can get to it by dropping the pan. I should be able to replace the rings or whatever for it than, right? I may not need a whole new tranny, just nurse this one for a bit longer?

If you drop the pan its right there in the corner. I have seen just once, the pin on the servo snapped.

I would inspect this as soon as you can, if its not the servo there could be peices floating in your trans.

Working today, so may be able to get to it tomorrow. No ill side effects as of yet, no noise or anything. Maybe I will get lucky on this one. Funny thing is, I wasn't even hot rodding it or anything, just shifted into R to back out of drive. :icon_confused:

I see we are fairly close to each other, I'm in Twentynine Palms. Do you know of any "good" parts places to get another tranny? We have two salvage yards up here and their prices are usually around 70% of what a new part would cost.

About how much would I be looking at for a used tranny? What years can I use? Will assume have to get it off of a Ranger or Bronco II. Have to do more research.

Thanks again.

I get all of my stuff from the trans shop thats down the mtn from me.
there is a pick a part down there too, but I have a hard time buying someone elses problems.

what ever your problem is, I can get new parts for it, and I can walk you through it...
