i have a 84 ranger.i pulled the tranny cuz i thought the throw out bearing was bad because it was clanking really bad and the clutch and throw out bearing are bad but when you spin the shaft inside the tranny it makes a really loud thunking noise,im sure the tranny is shot but could it possibly be that thats how they are?need feedback thanks guys=)

Is the noise like every time you rotate it? if it is then I bet you blew up a gear or two. Thats what happened to mine, just happened to be the gear/input shaft one. :P

Do you know what trans it is, Mazda or Mitsubishi? And I am assuming its a 5 speed manual?

sounds about like mine

sheared teeth off the input shaft...if yours still drives it must not be completely gone but it will definitely take some work.

You don't really need that anyway :D haha, I'm joking

I'd agree with everyone else... Time to take it apart and view some carnage!!!

welcome to the club, i got my truck and it needed a tranny. put new bearings in it and 1 1/2 years later its making noise again :dunno: so i guarantee i'll be in the market for a new trans- junk yard ofcourse- withing 3-4 months time. idk wat it is but these early 80's trannys sux balls!!!!

yeah but heres the catch..

i went to a friends house to get something and it started clanking reallllll bad and when i got back to my house i was puttin in 1st and the truck went into a convulsion like state and started shaking and lunging and died.i started it back up and had to hold the petal to the floor board and pop to clutch in 4low to get it to even drive and even then it (lunged, clanked, buzzed and shook horribly!)..i have it out now and the throw out bearing had a little slop and the clutch was a little scared not too bad and the tranny when you spin the input shaft doesnt sound bad till you it a certain spot and it clanks..isnt there a input shaft bearing that could be bad...the tranny shifted fine in and out of the truck so i am kinda stunned.helppppp

it's not hard to get a look at the gears. Just take the top cover off and you can look inside. Sounds to me like you've got a couple broken teeth on the input shaft.

would it be hard to replace those gears yourself?

that all depends on how comfortable you are with disassembling a transmission.

I was going to do it on mine, but looking at the cost, I could save myself some money and the work of a rebuild by finding one in a junkyard. Rebuild kits that include the input shaft and countershaft will run you nearly $300. You can get a rebuilt transmission with a warranty for $500.

yeah i might just hit up a junkyard considering im on a limited budget.another weird thing is when i started it up before i tore it apart i would let the clutch out and it would lundge forward and die like as if it was in gear.It would idle for about 30 seconds lundge forward about an inch and die.(it was in neutral by the way)
