i have a 1988 ford ranger xlt 4x4. when i am driving in od or drive my truck will not shift at all but if i put it in 1 i can drive and shift it in to 2nd manualy but it will not go in to 3rd or 4th at all i was wondering if anyone new what the probleme was any help would be great thanks

There are a couple electrical issues that could cause this problem. I don't think the auto's are on any type of fuses though.

Give it a while, someone who knows will be along.

Is this a problem that only happens when cold? If so, there could be a problem with the governor inside your transmission. If you remove the tail housing on the transmission, you will see it. Usually it's a problem with varnish or debris. Clean it to the point of it being surgically clean and try that, if that doesn't work, it could be a valve body issue. Cleaning the valve body is as it sounds. Make sure you replace the separator gasket and separator plate. Use OE parts from ford too. They are a bit more money, but well worth the expense. I believe there is a complete "update" gasket kit too. last time I checked, it was worth about 145 bucks Canadian.

I have the same tranny and i unhooked the vacume line that runs down to
the tanny from the manifold. Got the same problem/result you have. hope this helps you out.

I agree with F150hybred.

I does sound like a sticky governor.

I had the exact same problem with my A4LD a few years ago.
Cleaning the governor may help for a while but the problem will likely keep re-occuring because something is slowly failing. I cleaned mine four times over two years before the TC bushing failed.

it dose it wether it s cold or hot and how would u clean it can you use break cleaner

Yes, you can use brake cleaner. As I said before, just make sure it's surgically clean. It would also be a good time to change your filter and pan gasket. Good luck and let us know how it turned out.

i cleaned the govenor and chaged fluid and filter still the same thing no difference
