So my fiance pretty much hates my ranger, its the 5 speed, 2.3 4x4. She says its ugly, hates manual transmissions and refuses to even learn how to drive them.

i love driving a stick but we're getting married next spring and i cant afford to get rid of my ranger right now unless an amazing deal comes up that i cant pass up, but she insists i sell it for something newer and more reliable...

well, to save the hassle of selling it, im thinking about just switching out the tranny's. So, is it hard to switch from the 5 speed manual to the A4LD? What would i need to do to make this work?

if its to much money i say screw it, she will have to learn someday, but i do love her and dont want to have to argue about this "issue" at any point in the future. either way, i dont plan on selling it so maybe this will keep her quiet...

Leave it Manual... It would be alot more money to swap it over... And she should learn, even though most automakers are going to automatics, when the war happens you and her will be glad you have a maual transmission that still works lol.

Finding an A4LD that bolts to a 4 cyl AND is 4x4 is pretty much impossible. You can get one out of a 2wd, but in order to get a transfer case bolted to it, you'll have to basically rebuild the whole thing to swap the output shaft. Buying a 16+ year old auto trans is a huge gamble anyway, so plan on rebuilding it regardless. V6 transmissions will not bolt up to a 4 cyl.

MAN UP. Im not kidding, financially it makes no sense to either get rid of it, or switch it to auto. Tell her to either learn how to drive it, or get something of her own. I have a fiance as well. If you let this slide, its only going to get worse after youre married.

just think of it this way if u leave it manual then she wont be able to drive(wreak) it :icon_rofl:

im perfectly fine with it being manual, its just what if im driving her car some day, i wreck it and the only vehicle that we have is my ranger and she doesnt know how to drive stick. We both are screwed in that situation.

so instead of this asinine idea of switching tranny's out, its going to be one of my life goals to get her to know how to drive stick.

x2. Just get her to learn to drive a stick. Thats a skill that everyone should have learned when they started driving.

x3! couldnt have said it better myself!

Anybody un-willing to learn to drive a stick is either

A-lazy
B-to stupid
C-scared of'em on hills when they hafta take off without rolling backwards

And that "I just don't like them" answer is just a cover up for one of the above.
I heard that from my wife when I first bought a stick. I told her she had to learn the stick or walk. Now she can drive it as good or better than any of us guys. But I did finally buy here a 99 auto so she would have her own truck.

I'd bet a dollar to a donut if you told her you was going to buy a brand new mazda miata with a stick that she'd be more than willing to drive it.

If you cave now you fall right into that thing some comedian said awhile back

"The Pu**affication of men" Dont gig me on spelling, I don't think its even a real word..

After reading your first post again, I would say she is also a material girl too

some harsh comments here. No she is not a material girl, she is quite "country" i must say. Loves big trucks and SUV's. Anyways, it seems most of you skipped my last post. I will do as you guys say and try to teach her the ways of the manual transmission.
