Bellhousing is integral* (ie: can't be reasonably interchanged w/ a few bolts) on these transmissions
Bolt pattern on 4.0/2.9 will interchange with each other (kinda)
Bolt pattern on 2.3/2.5 will interchange with each other (I think)
Bolt pattern on 3.0 is a unique animal
*If you had nothing but time on your hands, you MIGHT be able to take the guts out of both transmissions and put the 4.0 guts in the 3.0 case (with the integral 3.0 bellhousing) - the would be (understatement) a major undertaking for an average human and the chance of lousing something up would (IMHO) be high
There is no "kinda" involved in the bellhousing patterns between the 2/9 and 4.0 unless you are talking about the pattern of the 4.0-SOHC which has one relocated hole...
But the posts above are absolutely correct the 3.0 is totally different...
Yup, the 2.9/4.0 holes line up, engine to transmissionwise. THe kinda comes in with the oilpans - 2.9 has a stamped steel pan that does not bolt to the transmission, the 4.0 has a cast aluminum pan that kinda does
Yeah, but those two holes are still present on the 2.9 trans. They are just threaded on the trans side for two bolts to keep the block plate from rattling.
Honestly, the M5OD is an incredibly simply transmission. If you do a complete gut swap and have even half a clue the odds of "lousing something up" are pretty low. The worst part is getting the output shaft retaining nut off if you don't have the actual tool or an air chisel.
