Will a Tranny from a 91 4.0 work in my 85 2.9. I know it will bolt up but is it going to work for me? Both are 4X4 but im not going to be doing any wheelin or anything just want to know if somethings going to break right away if I do it.
 
More information would be helpful.
 
From what little knowledge I have I would say it comes down to one word. NOPE. But you need to tell us more. Automatic... Standard.. Etc. Many folks on here know a lot but are not mind readers.
 
Both are 5 speed's. Not sure what else you need to know, any other questions just ask. From what i've read the only difference is the tranny from the 2.9 was geared for more low end. I do mainly highway driving so I think it would work better and help with gas mileage. My concern I guess would be wether or not my 2.9 is going to be able to handle it. I beleive it should but would like to know for sure before I buy the parts truck.
 
I am running a 4.0 manual trans behind my 2.9. You notice it on hills, but it won't break anything.

After reviewing your info though, I have to challenge you on your stated engine. 1986 was the first year for the 2.9.

The transmissions will be different lengths. The ears for the cross member must be removed from the frame and relocated to the rearward set of holes and you will need to get the right drive shafts.

My mistake, it is the 2.8. My last ranger was an 86. They have the same block right :icon_confused:. Also will the driveshafts off the donor ranger bolt up in that case?
 
The 2.8, 2.9 and 4.0 all share a bell pattern, so you are still good there.

The drive shaft front flanges will be the same, but the axle end will require swapping of the yokes (meaning it is time for new u-joints). You need to watch wheel base as well. It has to have the same body option as yours.
 
Alright, I'll probably just pass on the 4.0 then. If I get one from a 2.9 will I be able to just swap it out or will that require extra work as well?
 
That depends. The TK 4 and 5, FM 145 and FM146 and M5OD were the available transmissions, there are 4 different lengths represented there. The mods needed are not hard, just important.
