My A4LD started leaking badly from the front seal back in august and the truck has kicked around home while I'm at university. A parts truck for $300 has become available to me with an M5OD. The parts truck has a manual transfer case that doesn't work ( I dont know the problem). I was thinking about swapping in the manual trans over christmas break while I'm home and I'm wondering if I'll run into problems using low range with the electric transfer case in my truck. Now you need the brake applied and auto tranny in neutral. I assume the clutch pedal position switch works in conjunction with the low range switch. I plan on using the wiring harness from the donor truck and seeing as wiring harnesses are pretty standardized I cant see this being an issue. Im trying to clear up any issues I might run into.

Any feedback is appreciated, thanks guys!

The CPP switch will have to be swapped in when you swap out the pedals, the wiring for the switch should be there already. The CPP will show the neutral for the 4x4 low.

The trans should be plug-and-play, it would be sweet if you could fix the manual transfer case.

Thanks. I would like to at least know what the problem is with the manual t-case is, but until I get the truck I wont know. The guy said "it wouldnt shift". could be something simple. My truck is a 91 XLT and from what I understand a manual trans wasnt available with this model in 91. the donor truck is a 93 mazda b4000. Im still assuming everything is the same because its a 4.0L

No, you were told wrong. Manual was available in 91. I don't think a 93 computer will run your 91 engine properly. There were slight, but important, differences IIRC.

so then a computer from a 90-92 is needed?

I'm pretty sure you will need a comp from a 91-92. IIRC Some of the EARLY 90 4.0l's ran an odd-ball 14# injector, not a 19# like the 91+.

93+ had 2 O2 sensors. (amongst other things that will stop it from working right.)

you do not need to change the computer when you do the manual trans swap ,you should have every thing you need as both are 4.0

Thanks guys, I did some more hunting around on here and I'm just going to use the auto computer and deal with the CEL. Its not worth the trouble or the money to find a computer at this point in time. Some say it may run a little differently but its nothing drastic

If a 91 Explorer 5spd computer will work, I've got one sitting around collecting dust. You can have it for $20 plus shipping.
