Hello. I hope this to become a general discussion about swapping transmissions in a 99 Ranger, 3.0L flex 4x4 manual transmission. I know a lot of people on here have done all kinds of swaps, and creative mods when it comes to swapping engines, trannys, and gears.

I think my tranny is going to go here in the next year (hopefully it makes it that long). And besides, I am in a tech. school for automotive and have an entire shop and the full array of tools at my disposal, and we are allowed to do anything we want on our vehicles as a way to learn, and have repetitious knowledge.

SO, what should I get a donor tranny out of? I don't have a million dollars, but i want it to be a solid one. I also would like to put bigger/better gears in the rear as I have heard it helps the 3.0L have a little more beef to it, right? what are some good options? should I find a rebuilt one? also, if I do swap the tranny I should get the transfer case that came along with the donor/new tranny, right?

also, it might be worth mentioning, I am considering doing the explorer swap on the rear axle, to have rear disc brakes as well. i can't stand those stupid drums.

any help would be awesome!

Well the only tranny that will fit you 3.0L will be another 3.0l tranny, as the M5OD is already the best manual tranny they put in the ranger I would just stick with rebuilding yours or getting one from a donor 3.0L... you don't need to swap tcases either as all newer rangers have the electric BW1354 tcase.

Yes if you are running up to I'd say...31's on your truck upgrading the gears to 4.10's will help alot. But you gotta swap the front gears out too. If you go with an explorer 8.8 make sure its got the VSS in it for your ABS brakes and speedo. Get one with limited slip too! I am getting frustrated at my open diff.

what should I get the 4.10 gears out of?

Well... are you getting the 8.8"? Either way your looking at a 98+ ranger or explorer with a 7.5" (if you keep that) or an 8.8" if you swap for your gears. that way you can rob the front too.
