1989 bronco II xlt, all stock. I did two seperate post just to keep on target better.one was for drive shaft , this one for transmission. The transmission is slipping , I can drive in 1,2,3 fine but when it hits OD it free revs if I try to get it to downshift. Im guessing it needs servicing or rebuilding. any info about it would be appreciated.

The A4LD has these problems. Everybody just about has them eventually. First the OD goes, then the other gears as well. It's teh Pinto automatic with an OD added and then being run behind a V6 4X4. Bad combo. You will need to have the trans overhauled and then hope for the best. It's a weak transmission and these are the problems.

the best option in my opinion would be to convert it to a 5-speed. if you are a competent mechanic and have a garage, you should be able to do it in about a day and a half. it will be way cheaper than having the auto rebuilt, and you will get way better gas mileage! plus it will free up more power.

Yup , post 10 is me all right. How much is a good reasonable price, to rebuild a trans that is in good shape ? an average rebuild ? After reading that whole post , Im thinking I am crazy enough to try it myself ! I used to help my Dad do 350 and 400 turbos when I was a younger. He showed me alot of things, some I remember some ,not so much. Any videos or manuals specific to a4lds rebuilds ?

I believe the 93 Ranger tranny rebuild my grandfather had done was close to $2,000. Didn't even last a year, transmission failed again about 11 months later in the driveway luckily.

i priced having my moms explorer trans rebuilt, $1300 if i carry it in! and that didnt include the torque converter! ended up doing it myself. if you do rebuild it, make sure to replace the converter! most times when a trans is rebuilt and fails again, it is because the converter was not replaced. the converter can hold a ton of debris from a broken trans. a lot of trans failures are caused by a faulty converter

how about replacing trans with a c4 or c5 ? I need a new rear drive shaft anyway.

Edit: I called around most places want around 1400 to rebuild the trans depending how bad it is. Thats not gonna happen. If Im gonna spend that much I need something better. what are my options with other autos ?

70roadrunner, I warming up to your idea. what type of vehicle should I start getting parts from? my b2 is a 89 ?

i believe an 88-92 B II, ranger or explorer. check the tech library, it has all the info you will need. im sure you could find a ranger or explorer for around $500 or less, and get a 4.0 also! where do you live? i have all the stuff out of my B II, including the pedal assembly

You could use a C4 or C5. One out of an '84 or '85 would fit easily. Otyerwise, you would need a 4wd trans, then locate the bellhousing from an 84 or 85. Not easy. I sold one and had lots of people ask for it :)

I live in Mid Michigan, quite a way away from you , I think. lol.
