I have the classic whine except in 4th or when clutch is pressed on a m5r1 and I was wondering if I buy a rebuild kit from a parts store would it be everything i need to end the noise? Also do you guys know about how long it would take if I did it myself with nothin but some tools a chilton manual and a prayer? Thanks for the input

it doesn't happen in 4th cause thats direct drive. The Pocket bearing is probably your culprit. that is the bearing that allows the two shafts to rotate at different speeds. Here is a good web site http://www.mackstrans.com/transID.html Go down to the M5R1. There is a breakdown and a parts reference sheet. I had a '91 4x4 4.0 ranger that I had a bad whine and put off repairing and one day it locked up in 4th and that was that. And then I ended up tossing the tranny cause it ruined the shafts. So moral of the story don't put it off:icon_thumby:

I had roughly 300 byucks in the rebuild of my M5od and that was with the input and main shaft along with the bearings andsuch.

my kit did. replaced every bearing in the transmission and it still makes the same noise except in 4th. the shafts all looked fine, my guess is that the damage was done when i drove it like that for 2 years and probably created a wear pattern.

i was able to put it all back together with everything in spec. 1 thing they did not provide was shims for setting input shaft end play.

aside from the noise the transmission shifts awesome now. i recommend replacing shifter bushings while you have it apart.

another thing my kit did not include was the reverse synchro cause i had to count the number of teeth on it and order it separately, mine was shredded
