I have a 1996 Ranger, 4x4, 4.0, auto. How do I tell what trans I have. Starting to have tranny probs, and looking for a replacement. Just closing in on 200,000 miles.

Could be the 4r55e or A4LD.

There should be a transmission code on the door sticker.

repair manual

Get a repair manual and it should tell you.

Check your tranny code on your door then go to the decoder in the tech section, That's what I did.

Thanks for the help guys.

My Trans code is T. I went to the tech library, and found this..

A4LD T 1985-1994 Ranger & Bronco II With Overdrive 4-Speed 2.47 / 1.47 / 1.00 / 0.75

4R44E T 1995-2000 4-Cylinder & 3.0L Rangers (2001 w/2.5L) (1995-1996 Explorer w/4.0L) 4-Speed 2.47 / 1.47 / 1.00 / 0.75

Neither really fits my application. 1996 Ranger XLT extended cab, 4x4, 4.0.

Any other input?

Go to the tech library and look up diagnose page, find the location of the tranny tag and crawl under you truck and id for sure.
